China’s ruling communist party submitted a proposal last Sunday that would allow the president to stay in power indefinably. The communist party wants to remove a clause in the constitution that limits the term of the presidency.
The current president Xi Jinping has in office since 2013, the change how would allow him to be in power beyond 2023. The current constitution states that Xi Jinping has to step down after serving a total ten years in office.
“The Communist Party of China Central Committee proposed to remove the expression that the President and Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China ‘shall serve no more than two consecutive terms’ from the country’s Constitution,” Xinhua said.
What is happening in China is potentially a very dangerous situation if they manage to change the constitution. The problem will come when China has to change leadership as death. History also teaches us that too much power concentrated in one person is very dangerous, just look at North Korea.
Having terms of limits ensures that enables governments to prepare for transitions.
According to one political analyst “The theoretical justification for removing tenure limits is that China requires a visionary, capable leader to see China through this multi-decade grand plan.”
According to ABC news to Change in the constitution is subject to approval by the parliament. Political analysts are saying that the proposal will likely go through because the parliament is filled with members chosen for their loyalty to the party.
